Bitcoin Debit Cards in EU by Wirex

Cryptocurrency bank Wirex is starting offering new debit crypto cards in the European Union. According to a company’s press release, quoted by crypto media, multiple currency accounts will be supported by the new generation of the cards and they will enable contactless payment functionality. On Thursday, the first new plastic Visa cards were issued, according to media experts.

According to the report, the redesigned Wirex accounts and the new debit cards are offered in the UK since March 8, while in France, Germany, and Italy they will be available for order on March 20. The launch date for other EU counties is said to be March 27.

Wirex Community Manager Raphael Shalaby confirmed earlier this week the successful internal and external beta tests with a number of payment processors. They purchased products from merchants like Amazon using the new Wirex cards.

Shalaby said in the company’s forum:

“Rollout will start within 14 days on a country by country basis.”

He went on saying that the virtual cards were “days away” and the plastic cards are being manufactured, and their release would take 5-6 weeks more.

Wirex will provide three types of payments cards:

  • Virtual cards
  • Physical cards, allowing contactless payments (initially in GBP, later in EUR)
  • Pre-paid debit card similar to the original Wirex card (available for other currencies)

Answering the questing regarding the pending launch, Raphael Shalaby denied defining an exact timeframe saying:

“It’s a priority. I can only say it will happen ASAP!”

According to the company’s website, the users’ access to their virtual cards will be immediately after registration, and claiming one is free of charge. However, a user to order a plastic card now requires joining a waiting list, and those enlisted will be in priority, according to Wirex Community Manager. An order for a plastic card submitted in the UK is given a number close to 57,000.

Wirex cards can be used both for cryptocurrency payments and instant exchange between digital coins and fiat money. According to the company, they are currently the only provider of the opportunity to pay for goods and services by converting cryptocurrency to Europeans.

“Shopping, purchasing goods on the Internet, and withdrawing funds at an ATM has become much easier”, said co-founder and CEO Pavel Matveev, quoted by Russia media. He also confirmed the integration of cryptocurrency wallet accounts with contactless Visa debit cards.

Earlier this year, several crypto card issuers finished their operation after Visa Europe stopped its cooperation with Gibraltar-based payment provider Wavecrest. Visa representatives explained the move with “continued non-compliance with operating rules” and stated that crypto-fiat programs in other jurisdictions would not be affected by the termination of Wavecrest’s membership.

The new cards allow free and instant Bitcoin transfer between account holders, with multi-signature Bitcoin addresses for improved security. As at the time encryption is better, merchants can enjoy more freedom of action and reduced fraud risk. UK residents will be able to use individual e-money accounts with unique members for third-party payments.

Both plastic and virtual cards can be ordered. They will support 3D secure “Verified by Visa” transactions. “As soon as virtual cards are available, we’ll be able to switch on the buy bitcoin exchange feature”, according to a previous update on the company’s website.

According to Wirex, there will be similar proposals for users in Japan and Southeast markets. Wirex will introduce the new cars gradually to ensure stable and secure support.
